Silver Surfers ‘log on’
Published 1st June 2010
Rievaulx House held a Silver Surfers Day event on the 21st May.
Some of the residents took the opportunity to 'log on' for the first time and have a go on the internet. Rievaulx House have an internet workstation and free internet access for residents to use whenever they want. They can surf the web or use it to keep in touch with family and friends.
As generations evolve there is an increasing demand for internet services in care centres. As a result, more and more of our homes are getting online and organising training sessions for both residents and staff.
With the phenomenon of social networking still taking over the globe, services such as Friends Reunited and Skype are becoming increasingly useful tools for keeping in touch with friends and family - something which is extremely important and beneficial to residents in our care centres.
Manager Carl Stevenson said "Many of our residents haven't had to use a computer for work and haven't had a computer at home. It is hard for them to see how learning to use a computer can benefit them."
However some residents took the plunge and realised that with a bit of practice to get used to it, it was something they would like to keep doing and was actually quite good fun!
