Meridian Healthcare’s John Joseph Powell Nursing & Care Centre in Prescot is proud to have been accredited with the maximum 5 stars by the RDB Star Rating System.

Established for the care industry the RDB Star Rating System is an independent body that works in partnership with local authorities and the private sector to promote the delivery of excellent care and recognises those who provide it.

The team at John Joseph Powell have worked hard to build on last years 4 star success to maximise their potential and achieve 5 stars this year, a rating which according to the RDB system ‘Demonstrates an excellent standard of care.’

Care Centre Manager Dot Pye commented: ‘We are delighted to receive the 5 stars, all of the team have worked very hard to improve on last years report making improvements in any areas required, especially the activities programme. Due to the nature of our client group it is often difficult to arrange activities that everyone can participate in, so we have decided to take a different approach and to compliment the group activity programme already in place we have focused on more individual centred activities, for example, aromatherapy massage, shopping trips into the local area where possible, and even with simple pastimes like reading and completing crosswords. We have made sure that all of our residents have the opportunity to join in with the entertainment should they wish to do so. In addition we have also had a sensory garden added to the grounds which gives a lot of pleasure with beautiful sights, textures and smells, it has been a big hit as our residents enjoy the fresh air when the British weather permits.’

Dot adds: ‘These improvements plus hard work from our care staff have led to the 5 star award, I would like to congratulate my team and say keep up the good work.’

• John Joseph Powell provides nursing care for older people. The care centre was assessed in 2007 by RDB and awarded 4 stars. JJP joins Westwood Lodge in Wigan, who have also achieved the RDB 5 star accolade.
