HEALTHY HIPS & HEARTS AT STAMFORD COURT

08/05/2006
Residents at Meridian Healthcare’s Stamford Court Stamford Court ensure they keep in tiptop shape through a weekly ‘Hips & Hearts’ Class at the Stalybridge Care Centre.

Residents are put through their paces by trained fitness instructor and care assistant Rachel Hewitt. The regular exercise programme aids all the residents in ensuring they keep active and alert. Government guidance suggests that regular exercise decreases the chances of falling in the elderly and helps to avoid ‘slips trips and broken hips’. In addition to physical benefits, there is evidence that exercise improves upon the mental health of older people over 75.

A varied activities programme is essential for the well being of residents and complements the Hips and Hearts programme in place. The activities that take place in all Meridian Healthcare care centres aim to provide both mental and physical stimulation for our residents to ensure they remain active and interact with fellow residents.

Care Centre Manager Christine Evans commented, ‘We have a great turn out for the Hips & Hearts class each week and the residents thoroughly enjoy taking part. It is essential that residents remain as active as possible and these classes enable residents to do just that.’
