Barbara Hall shows that retired returnees to work are just as likely to be interested in learning and furthering their careers as their younger peers.

68-year-old mother of six, Barbara Hall recently achieved her NVQ level 2 whilst working at Meridian Healthcare’s The Beeches in Dukinfield. She decided to study for the qualification when she saw other staff successfully completing the course.

Barbara has worked in care all her life and after retiring a few years ago decided retirement wasn’t for her. She returned to work at Meridian Healthcare’s Greatwood House in Denton for 3 years before transferring to her current post at The Beeches.

The NVQ Level 2 qualification is an essential qualification for carers wishing to work in the care sector long term. Barbara found the qualification demanding at times, as it was difficult to find the time to complete the written work. However, she is pleased she persevered and very proud of her achievements as are her family and especially Meridian Healthcare. She explained, “I was determined to complete the course and enjoyed the challenge.”

The training for the qualification took place in The Beeches Care Centre. Marie McPherson, Home Manager at The Beeches is very pleased: “I was very confident that Barbara would be able to complete the course as she is a very experienced care worker and is always appointed as a mentor to new members of staff at the care centre. We are all delighted for her.”

Barbara is one of many Meridian Healthcare staff who undergoes care related NVQ training each year. Meridian Healthcare employs NVQ assessors at all its care centers and provides all training in-house for the course.
