As this is Dementia Awareness Week, we are sharing our top tips to help people with dementia stay happy and healthy.
Following on from the success of Meridian’s national award winning HARMONY dementia programme, care centre manager Janet Pearson from Kingsfield care home in Ashton-under-Lyne shares some simple ideas to help anyone caring for a loved one with dementia.
Follow these easy tips for anyone with a dementia related condition to stay happy and healthy:
· Keep active and involved in daily life – it’s good to feel useful no matter how small or seemingly insignificant the task
· Get more sleep – increasing activity level just a little, for example getting involved in simple tasks such as making the bed or preparing vegetables will help improvements in sleep patterns and increase your appetite
· Get fresh air and as much day light as possible. Sun light helps to boost the serotonin levels (our happy hormones) and helps to strengthen bones and teeth
· If possible get a set of single coloured crockery – we use blue crockery at Kingsfield so that all food stands out on the plate. We have also used red crockery at Amber Lodge in Leeds and whilst this isn’t as good as blue, it still makes a difference. The crockery helps the individual to see the food on the plate and to clearly see the plate on the table.
